Pilgrim 12 Arrestees Make Solid Case To Close Nuclear Reactor

Dr. Richard Clapp, retired epidemiologist, former professor at Boston University and University of Massachusetts, as well a founder of the Massachusetts public health department’s cancer registry testified as an expert witness that studies around the Pilgrim Nuclear Station showed a 95% statistical certainty of a causal relationship between ionizing radiation emitted from the plant, and leukemia clusters in plant workers and residents in the area. Dr. Clapp said the plant poses, “An unacceptable risk to public health." He testified that in the event of a catastrophic accident at the reactor, that human beings within 50 miles of releases of radiation could suffer both immediate fatalities, and long term increases in cancers such as breast, lung, thyroid and leukemia.
